• There is evidence that since 1700, the first patients were treated in San Diego de Los Baños (1632) and the first analysis of its hot springs occurred in 1797.

• The spa San Miguel de los Baños, in Matanzas province, was one of the trendy places of the world in the first half of the 19th century, after being granted the Grand Prize in both the San Francisco and Seville exhibitions.

• The first articles on the chemical composition of thermal waters in Cuba published at the Annals of the Havana Academy of Medical, Physics, and Natural Sciences were recorded between 1872 and 1909.

• The academic and human resource training in this field has continued in time through the National Institute of Medical Hydrology and Climatology (INHCM), founded in 1945.
